About Migraines in Children and Teens

Migraines are a severe, chronic neurological condition characterized by episodic attacks of moderate-to-severe headache and sensory disturbances. Migraines represent a major cause of disability in adults and in children.

Among children, a headache is the most common symptom and the most common source of pain when experiencing a migraine attack.

Other symptoms to look out for include:

  • Irritability or mood changes
  • Sensitivity to sound and light
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and/or vomiting

To diagnose migraines in children, the same criteria is used to diagnose adults, but with differences in duration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a clinical research study?

A Clinical Research Study (also called a clinical trial) is a medical study that helps answer important questions about an investigational drug or device, such as: does it work, or how effective is it compared to another drug/device?

All medications must be tested in clinical research studies before they can be approved by regulatory authorities for doctors to prescribe to patients. Without people taking part in these studies, we would have no new treatments. The volunteers who participate in clinical research studies play a major role in helping to advance medicine.
